Nofollow vs Dofollow: Both Are Good; But Where?

I have seen many newbie asking questions about nofollow vs dofollow.

You might have seen that robots have noindex, doindex, nofollow, dofollow and many other settings. They all having great importance in search engine ranking but most of the time people got confused finding the difference between them.

Bloggers keep looking for dofollow blogs as they heard from someone that dofollow are great.

You might have little idea that dofollow are good for gaining an excellent pagerank but never tried to know that what is the difference actually. Here I am going to explain nofollow vs dofollow in detail.

nofollow vs dofollow Nofollow vs Dofollow: Both Are Good; But Where?

What is nofollow?

Nofollow is a HTML attribute which tell search engines that we are not caring about this link and you should not give importance to this links while crawling my article. This happens sometimes that we want to insert something in our article but that is not having that much value in terms of search engine ranking.

e.g we keep inserting affiliate links in posts for earning commission. All those affiliate links must be nofollow so that Google can differentiate that you don’t want to do anything with those links. But yeah !! those links are going to give you commission. icon smile Nofollow vs Dofollow: Both Are Good; But Where?

Nofollow links are very very important for driving traffic at your blog. Because when you comments on other blogs then in most of the cases they will give you nofollow link. But you should not care about nofollow because your quality comment is giving you traffic and you are getting new readers on your blog. If you know how to comment like a pro then you can drive great traffic via nofollow links in comments.

How to make link nofollow in blog post?

Making link nofollow in a article body is very easy. Here are the steps.

  1. Switch your Visual Editor into Text Editor from top right side of the text area.
  2. Find links which you want to modify.
  3. This will look like <a href=”http://www.bloggingcage.com/”>Blogging Cage</a>.
  4. Just add rel=’nofollow’ in the link and it will look like <a href=”http://www.bloggingcage.com/” rel=’nofollow’>Blogging Cage</a>.
  5. Now Google will consider this link as nofollow link and you will be on safer side.

Note: By default links in your posts are dofollow links.

This happens sometimes that we want to make any particular post as nofollow and noindex so that Google cannot crawl those posts and show in Search Results.

In my case I have some pages which I don’t want to show in Google search result like my “Free theme download page” my “EBook download page” and there are many other pages which I don’t want to show.

So what can I do?

For hiding you article from search engines you will have to do completely nofollow and noindex them.

I am using genesis framework so they have inbuilt feature in post setting to do all meta settings.

bobots Nofollow vs Dofollow: Both Are Good; But Where?

I can easily make posts noindex and nofollow.

If you are not a genesis user then you can download WordPress Meta Robots Plugin.

Here comes the question !! Are they relevant?

See this video, what Matt Cutts is saying about nofollow links.

What is dofollow?

Dofollow is also a HTML attribute which tell Google to provide link juice to the link having dofollow attribute. You might have seen that most of the blogs are having nofollow comment these days, because no one wants to provide link juice to spammy comments.

So when Google will see that your links is a dofollow link then the spider will crawl your links and they will give you importance in search engine ranking.

Dofollow links have huge importance for getting PageRank for your blog.

ReadWhy PageRank is just another factor?

Getting quality dofollow links is very hard as no one is going to give you at free of cost. So all you can do is start guest posting and add your blog links in your author bio as dofollow link.

Final Words!!

So this was all about nofollow vs dofollow. Both have importance, as nofollow links can help you to get traffic and dofollow links provides you pagerank after link juice.

The Discussion

  1. There have been always a debate about the significance of nofollow and dofollow links. But I think both are equally important in their own perspective. Thanks for making the difference more clear.

  2. Thanks for this great post. It is good to consider the “Do follow” links first before the “No follow” because of the link juice they pass to your site.
For your comment to enjoy that privilege especially on a site that allows a “Do follow” link, it must always be of great quality. Then you can think of adding the “No follow” link from blogs that have high traffic so as to enjoy traffic flow from them.
However, when making your comment or writing an ordinary blog post, you must know when to or when not to add a “Do follow’ link, otherwise the purpose of adding such links would be completely defeated.

  3. Hi Kulwant Sir,

    Great Post!
Thanks For this Nice Information.. this is the quite helpful for me! :)

  4. believe me you explained both the terms in a very easy manner. I was also confused between no-follow and do-follow. Now everything is clear.

    Thanks :) :)

  5. Hey Kulwant,
Nice post. In my opinion, I feel that both the links are quite important. A blog should have both, nofollow and dofollow links. If a blog or website only has dofollow links, then there are high chances that Google might get suspicious about the activities and might end up banning the blog.
I would always suggest to have the same number of backlinks, both nofollow and dofollow.
    Thanks for the article.
    Cheers :)

  6. Of course it’s better to get dofollow links for SEO. But I think that a lot of bloggers and webmasters do end up getting fixated on getting them, particularly when blog commenting.

As you say, you can get traffic directly from good quality nofollow comments. And you can also end up getting SEO benefit from them indirectly. This is because after finding your blog through the comment, the blogger may actually link to it in the body of a subsequent post.

    • Welcome at Blogging Cage Matt.

I was getting many question regarding this so writing a article was a great idea. With this article most of them will get their question answered.

As I said nofollow don’t have any importance in giving link juice but it can give you loyal readers if you are dropping quality comments at other blogs.
